Mrs. Shirley Dickson Abercrombie was born on May 29, 1936, and was the only child of the late John Daniel and Daisy Smith. A lifelong native of Greenville County, South Carolina, Shirley was a 1953 graduate of Sterling High School and a 1957 graduate of South Carolina State College. She has spent her career molding the minds of countless children as an educator within the Greenville County School System. Shirley was a loyal member of Aiken Chapel Baptist Church, where she served in many capacities.
In the late evening of Monday, November 13, 2023, the sun set on this faithful woman of God. She passed peacefully in the arms of family.
She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph Dickson III; husband Robert Abercrombie, Sr.; daughter Carmen René Bennett; and bonus son Lagorda Abercrombie.
Shirley truly had a love and a zest for life! She especially enjoyed traveling, spending time with her family, worshiping, working for the Lord, and rooting for her favorite football team, the Dallas Cowboys.
Left to cherish her memory are her devoted grand children Sherita (Dirk) Baker of Katy, TX; Shawnese Bennett and Joseph Bennett of Taylors, SC; faithful son-in-law Lee Bennett of Taylors, SC; great grandchildren Tahir “TJ” Charles, Damian Baker, Brooklyn Baker of Katy, TX; bonus granddaughter Kayla Charles of Houston, TX; bonus children Debora Abercrombie of Charlotte, NC; Robert (Carmen) Abercrombie of Fayetteville, NC; Lawrence Abercrombie of Fayetteville, NC; Vent (Terri) Abercrombie of Charlotte, NC, bonus daughter-in-law Vanessa Abercrombie of Columbia, SC; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Viewing will be from 1:00 until 5:00 PM on Monday, November 20, 2023 in the chapel of The Gilmore Mortuary.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday, November 21, 2023 in Aiken Chapel Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Vincent Anderson and Dr. W. O. Harrison, Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
