Beverly Waddell Obituary

Beverly Jean Waddell (the Boss) daughter of the late Minnie Lyles transitioned peacefully from this life on Saturday, 1/22/2022. Beverly Waddell was adopted and raised by the late Josephine and Morris Lyles.

Beverly was educated in the Spartanburg school system, graduating from Carver High School in 1956. Beverly went on to pursue her nursing degree and graduated from the Good Samaritan Hospital in Charlotte, NC in 1959. Soon after graduation Beverly received the Apostle Rite of the Laying on of hands at a Confirmation Holding in the Church of St. Michaels and all Angels in Charlotte, NC.

Beverly was passionate about the nursing profession and the advancement of medical cures/technologies. She was a registered nurse and worked at Doctors’ Memorial and later at Spartanburg Reginal Medical Center until she retired. Beverly was a board certified in South Carolina, North Carolina, Alaska, and Alabama. Beverly was a member of the Professional Nursing Association, the only professional nursing organization she could join as a black nurse. Beverly and other members of this prestigious organization integrated the Spartanburg Regional Hospital System.

Beverly lived her life to the max. She brought so much hope and laughter to everyone. It was said that “She brighten up the room when she walked in.” She touched so many people and dedicated her life to serving others. Even after she retired, she continued serving her neighborhood and Spartanburg community. It was a joy for her to carpool her friends around town at a drop of a hat.

Beverly loved sewing, playing games on her tablet, and reading books. But as everyone knows, her very favorite things were: fishing with her nephew Odell Waddell, sister-in-law Francis Waddell, and friends; going to the casinos, and being a mean junk-talking card player!

Beverly was an active member of First Worship (First A.M.E) until her death.

Beverly leaves to mourn her three daughters: Sheina P. Waddell of Alexandria, VA by Sterling P. Woodard (deceased), Carla R. Waddell of Alexandria, VA, and Bern’Naddette L. Waddell of Charlotte, NC by Charles R. Waddell (Laura). Two special daughters Thalia Moore of Chicago, IL and Monique Boyce-James (Demar) of Sandy Hook, CT. One special son Shawn Simpson (Jackie). Grandchildren: Dané J. Waddell, Brandon X. Wright, Gabriel and Morgan Harris. Brothers: Daniel "Mack" Lyles (Carrie deceased) of Spartanburg, SC, James "Tootie" Lyles (Priscilla) of Temple Hills, MD, Emanuel "Rabbit" Lyles of Northern VA, and David "Bud" Lyles of Washington, DC. Sisters: Marianne “Anne” Lyles (deceased) of Washington, DC, Carolyn McGuire (Charles both deceased) of Washington, DC, Jennie Milton (Larry) of Washington, DC, Geogianna Dinkins (Mark deceased) of Washington, DC, and Paulette Lyles (deceased) of Washington, DC.
